Variability in self-identification has repeatedly been observed and described in Uzbek and, more generally, Turkic-speaking societies. Our example proves that a person who lives in a diglossic situation – albeit with a clear personal preference for the "superior" variety – is likely to switch identities back and forth along with language varieties.
