Members of both the Christian Slavic-speaking communities (Gounaris 1997) of Macedonia (as opposed to the Moslem Pomaks of Thrace) and of the Vlach-speaking communities of the Pindus mountains may have been at least somewhat culturally Greek; and urban areas would have had many non-dialectal-Greek speakers. But the local rural dialects would for the most part not have been Greek.

At the same time, the complexity of the Albanian dialectological data shows us that an integration of microlevel and macrolevel phenomena is essential to a complete and nuanced account of this complex linguistic area. And thus, while the North/South division of rhotacism, nasality, and the other relevant phonological phenomena attest to changes that are ancient or, at the latest, medieval, subsequent isoglosses demonstrate the importance of center/periphery and urban/rural contrasts in discussing precisely those developments that render Southeastern Europe a significant contact zone in modern terms.
