How was Vietnam able to successfully replace Han characters and Chu Nom with romanized Chu Quoc Ngu? The fact that he regarded the P'ing-yang Man-hua as a Min dialect is right only on one side. Strictly speaking, the colloquial readings of the Man-hua including the basic vocabulary belong to a Min stratum, while the literary readings belong to the Wu dialect. Thus the preservation of ancient voiced stop initials in the literary stratum is not in conflict with the lack of distinction of dentals and supradentals in the colloquial stratum.

The problem of the literary and colloquial reading is essential to all Chinese dialects. Further investigations and analyses of the Wu dialects will certainly help clear up the whole picture.
